Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells derived from the embryonic mesoderm. They have been extensively used for a wide range of cellular and molecular studies as they are one of easiest types of cells to grow in culture. Oral fibroblasts serve as the principal cell type in the lamina propria of the mucosa, secreting non-rigid extracellular matrix composed of collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans. Helping to regenerate the stable fibrillar connection between the tooth root, the gingiva, and the periodontal ligament, oral fibroblasts play an essential role during periodontal wound healing
