DTT is a strong reducing agent that is usually used to reduce or "deprotect" thiolated DNA. It can also reduce the disulfide bonds in proteins and can block the formation of intramolecular and intermolecular bonds between the cysteine residues of protein. DTT is often mixed with a solution of DNA, and then removed by techniques such as filtration or chromatography.
